We knew we wanted Pinnacle City to shift and change over time in order to create an interesting, dynamic world to explore. However, we needed to keep the scope reasonable. We are not creating a sandbox or MMO game, so we had to pick and choose the city's dynamic elements carefully. Today we showcase a few of Pinnacle City's most interesting elements.
Right out of the gate, Pixel Noir had a major challenge to conquer regarding world design. Most RPGs eventually have you hopping all over a continent, a planet, or even multiple worlds. Pixel Noir's story takes place entirely within Pinnacle City, so we had to figure out how to make a city as interesting and complete as a world.
Because of this, we’ve been hard at work trying to design the various sections of Pinnacle City. Much like a real city, each area is designed to be unique and have it's own personality. When you reach a new section of Pinnacle City, you are free to explore that area of the city to look for new cases, clues, and just general trouble if that’s what you’re after. And we didn't tell you, but check for secrets. Check everywhere.
Keep your eyes open, too--Pinnacle City will change over time as you play through Pixel Noir. Businesses will open or close, NPCs will come and go, and rare events will pop up and disappear in a flash.
Case System
A detective game is simply not complete without a fun way to investigate cases! The case system is set up to allow for a bit of intrigue when it comes to the jobs you will pick up.
When you pick up a job, it shows up as a case in your case file.
Selecting it will turns your active investigation. A menu opens up next to the case with several icons to indicate clues that have yet to be uncovered.
This is where you come in. You are the Detective and it's your job to find clues to crack the case! As you uncover clues to the case, the Detective adds his own notes on how he feels about the case so far.
At a certain point during the investigation, you might have enough clues to turn the case in and get paid. If you press on though, put on your gumshoes and really investigate, you might be able to find the remaining few clues to completely solve the case. Finding every clue can sometimes lead you to a different outcome.
Who knows? You might end up getting more experience, skill points, or other goodies like cold, hard cash.
Be careful! Some characters might come back around to haunt you later on if you hand in the case without putting the collar on the right suspect!
Black Markets
One of Pinnacle City’s most secretive dynamic changes the Black Markets. As a Detective, you are investigating more than just the cases that come to your attention; you are investigating Pinnacle City itself. Black Markets are constantly on the move to escape the Pinnacle PD. A Black Market may only exist for 24 hours before its raided and moves shop to a new location within the city.
Some of Pinnacle City's rarest items, weapons, modifications, and armor are found in these Black Markets. Some items will only appear in certain Black Markets too, so gumshoes have to be vigilant to try and find as many as they can!
You can always get hints on the location of the latest Black Market by finding informants in the game!
